ENGINEERING MATERIALS- MODULE 2-Activity 2

Answer the following questions:

  1. Why pieces of cast iron can not be bent? What are the properties that the material should have in order to be bent?






2. Give examples of situations where the material is subjected to tensile, compression and shear stress.

1-Because cast iron is mad up of metal-it has to be malleable.





2-Tensile: A car towrope needs tensile strength or it will break when pulled.

Compressive: property of compressive strength when it is pushed by the piston to turn the crankshaft.

Shear: need shear strength to resist being cut by a shear force.

1 : Pieces of cast iron can't be bent because they're made up of metal. The properties that the material should have in order to bent is being malleable.
