Engineering Materials - Module 3 activity 1

Activity 1

For each of the non-destructive testing methods shown below list one major limitation to its use:

Visual test.

Die Penetrant test.

Magnetic test

Ultrasonic test

Radiographic test.

1. they are testing on the surface

2.Liquid penetrant testing is a non-destructive method used to detect surface breaking defects in any nonporous material. Liquid penetrant is applied to the surface and is drawn into defects by capillary action

3.they are testing on the surface

4.Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make measurements. Ultrasonic inspection can be used for flaw detection/evaluation, dimensional measurements, material characterization, and more. To illustrate the general inspection principle, a typical pulse/echo inspection configuration as illustrated below will be used.

5.Radiographic and ultrasonic weld inspection are the two most common methods of non-destructive testing (NDT) used to detect discontinuities within the internal structure of welds

* Surface must be accessible to transmit ultrasound.
* Skill and training is more extensive than with some other methods.
* It normally requires a coupling medium to promote the transfer of sound energy into the test specimen.
* Materials that are rough, irregular in shape, very small, exceptionally thin or not homogeneous are difficult to inspect.
* Cast iron and other coarse grained materials are difficult to inspect due to low sound transmission and high signal noise.
* Linear defects oriented parallel to the sound beam may go undetected.
* Reference standards are required for both equipment calibration and the characterization of flaws.

1_Customers had to purchase Visual Test to develop scripts

2_ a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics)

3_ They are testing on the surface

4_Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make measurements

5_Radiographic Testing (RT), or industrial radiography, is a nondestructive testing (NDT) method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the ability of short wavelength electromagnetic radiation (high energy photons) to penetrate various materials.

1: it test only the surface..

2: its also for the surface but its better and more Easier

3:its for surface also but in this test you have to get some iron particles

4: its uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make measurements

5:Radiographic and ultrasonic weld inspection are the two most common methods of non-destructive testing (NDT) used to detect discontinuities within the internal structure of welds.

Die Penetrant test:PT increases the “seeability”of small discontinuities that the human eye might not be
able to detect alone.

Radio graphic test :his method of testing makes use of mechanical vibrations similar to sound waves but of higher frequency. A beam of ultrasonic energy is directed into the object to be tested. This beam travels through the object with insignificant loss, except when it is intercepted and reflected by a discontinuity. The ultrasonic contact pulse reflection technique is used.
